Manchester United have made just one high-profile signing during the summer transfer window.
Matheus Cunha was formally signed from Wolverhampton Wanderers in early June after his release clause was triggered.
Talks have been ongoing with Brentford over Bryan Mbeumo, but a deal has yet to be finalised.
Amidst this, L’Equipe claim that United have contacted the entourage of Lyon midfielder Corentin Tolisso to study the feasibility of a transfer.
The Frenchman is attracted to the project at United, but has no plans to force a move. He has two years remaining on his Les Gones contract.
The Red Devils will have to convince the Ligue 1 outfit, who want to build around their new captain (Tolisso) after Alexandre Lacazette’s exit.
Man Utd eyeing surprise move for Tolisso
The 30-year-old had a productive campaign for Lyon last term. He registered 10 goals and nine assists from 46 appearances in all competitions.
Tolisso was impressive in both legs of the Europa League quarter-final against United. He scored in the second leg before receiving a red card.
Aside from his goal contributions, the five-time Bundesliga winner has impressed with his ball control, duel-winning ability, ball recoveries and tackling skills.
After an injury-plagued spell at Bayern, Tolisso has managed to redeem himself at Lyon. He has missed only 19 games through injuries in the last three years.
His turnaround has caught the eye of the Red Devils, but the big question is whether Lyon will contemplate sanctioning his sale this summer.
Tolisso has a Transfermarkt value of just €12 million, but the Ligue 1 heavyweights could hold out for as much as €25m to contemplate a potential transfer.
The scenario was different earlier this summer when they were relegated to Ligue 2 due to financial issues. They have since won an appeal to be reinstated.
Lyon are now in a good position to keep hold of their prized assets.
United’s interest in Tolisso comes as a surprise. They could be looking for a cost-effective midfielder who can provide better control in the centre of the park.
