West Ham need to strenghten their midfield roster, but they may have an internal solution this season.

Carlos Soler has departed following his loan spell from Paris Saint-Germain, and the Hammers are keen on signing more players to boost their options in the middle.

Freddie Potts spent last season on loan at Portsmouth from West Ham, and he was outstanding in the Championship.

West Ham had a decision to make over whether to loan out the 21-year-old again or keep him, and it now appears that they have decided what to do with the midfielder.

West Ham to give Potts first-team chance

Graham Potter has now seemingly decided to keep Potts in the West Ham first-team and give him an opportunity to shine.

West Ham have announced three squad number changes for next season, and in doing so, confirmed that Potts is now considered part of the first-team.

Max Kilman will now switch to the number three shirt, while young left-back Ollie Scarles will wear the number 30.

Potts was excellent at Portsmouth last season

Potts has been given the number 32 shirt, and in the club statement, was referred to as a “first-team player” seperately from other academy graduates.

While 32 is sometimes considered a number for academy players, another loan spell does not appear to be on the cards for the young starlet.

Potts could be ready for West Ham first-team

Potts was outstanding at Portsmouth last season, impressing as he made 38 appearances, scoring once and assisting four times as a defensive midfielder.

With Tomas Soucek among those linked with a move away, Potts joining the first-team is a welcome boost, and his experience in a league as physical as the Championship will certainly be helpful.

The midfielder has made three senior appearances for West Ham after impressing in the academy, and now deserves a chance in pre-season.

If Potts can impress Potter over the summer, he will hope to earn some opportunities to shine in the Premier League, after racking up a lot of experience in the lower leagues in the EFL.
