Manchester United may suffer another striker blow as Liverpool reportedly hold talks to land £52m goalscorer

Manchester United’s striker hunt has seen Jean-Philippe Mateta emerge on the radar to lead Ruben Amorim’s attack.

Ruben Amorim wanted an attacking revolution at Manchester United this summer, but that has yet to really materialise.

Matheus Cunha joined United from Wolverhampton Wanderers, but the Brazilian has been the only arrival in the final third.

Alejandro Garnacho has been told to leave United, while the likes of Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Antony are also available.

Amorim would have surely hoped to have moved on some of those players by now, alongside bringing in more than one signing.

United continue to chase Bryan Mbeumo, but Ineos really need to get a move on with attacking additions ahead of the new Premier League season.

Liverpool should snatch Manchester United target Jean-Philippe Mateta

Mbeumo would join Matheus Cunha in the number 10 roles should a deal go through, and the attention would then turn to a new striker.

United explored signing Viktor Gyokeres, but the Sporting striker is poised to sign for Arsenal, while Newcastle United are now chasing United target Hugo Ekitike.

Amorim and co may need to look elsewhere, and Crystal Palace forward Jean-Philippe Mateta has popped onto the radar.

Reports in June suggested that United were interested in signing Mateta to lead the line under Amorim.

The Frenchman has now hit 30 goals in his last two Premier League seasons, leaving United to consider a summer move.

Nothing has advanced on that front just yet, and Foot Mercato in France now claim that Liverpool have made contact to sign Mateta.

It’s stated that Mateta and his representatives met with Liverpool in Paris to discuss a potential move to Anfield.

An offer of around €60million (£52million) may be enough to tempt Palace into selling, with Arne Slot’s men potentially ready to pip United to Mateta’s signature.

United’s striker pursuit may need to wait

United fans may be a little frustrated with the lack of progress over Mbeumo, but also as potential striking additions move elsewhere.

Gyokeres to Arsenal, Ekitike to Newcastle and Mateta to Liverpool would all take striking targets off the market for United, all while strengthening Premier League rivals.

United’s approach seems to be fairly clear: Mbeumo is the top target, and then other positions will be properly explored.

That means strikers may well fly off the market before United are ready to make a move, with Mateta potentially the next.

United will hopefully have the striker targets on the wish list, but have to hope that the centre-forward market isn’t completely dry once Mbeumo signs.
