Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James became one of the biggest storylines of the NBA offseason when his agent Rich Paul delivered a statement to ESPN last month that raised questions about the veteran’s future.
Since then, there has been a lot of noise, reporting and speculation surrounding James. But according to Paul, it’s “not for us to rebuttal or to try to give clarity on what’s said, what’s not said.”
“The focus is, hey man, enjoy your summer.”

“There’s so many voices in today’s game and around today’s game and media and things like that, and everyone has a job to do,” Paul said. “For us, hey, let those people do their job. It’s not for us to rebuttal or to try to give clarity on what’s said, what’s not said. That’s not the focus.”
While Paul isn’t always obligated to clear the air on rumors surrounding his clients, he did recently clear up a few key details on James while speaking to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin. According to Paul:
James’ camp didn’t ask for a new deal from the Lakers beyond the 2025-26 season
James hasn’t asked for a trade
Paul hasn’t even talked to the Lakers about the possibility of James asking for a trade in the future
Paul did hear from four interested teams about a potential trade for James

For now, there remain question marks about whether James will be with the Lakers to start the 2025-26 season, but something would have to change in order for the 40-year-old to be moved. He’s under contract with Los Angeles for one more season, and a trade doesn’t appear to be currently in the works, so as of now, he’s firmly a Laker.
James just had a season in which he averaged 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds and 8.2 assists per game while shooting 51.3 percent from the field and 37.6 percent from deep. After the Lakers gave up star big man Anthony Davis as part of a trade for star guard Luka Doncic, the team looked threatening at times but ended up losing in the first round of the playoffs.
The Lakers have made some moves this offseason to potentially position themselves better for title contention this coming season, including a deal for big man Deandre Ayton, but it’s unclear where James feels like they’ve done enough to truly change their outlook.
