Arsenal’s pursuit of Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres is reaching its final stages, with negotiations continuing in London tonight, despite fresh complications surrounding the structure of the deal. According to Fabrizio Romano, all parties remain in active discussions as Sporting push for more achievable add-ons, raising concerns that the transfer could yet collapse.

The Gunners are closing in on an agreement worth €63.5 million (£55 million) plus €10 million (£8.6 million) in bonuses for the prolific Swedish forward. Talks have accelerated in recent days, particularly after Gyokeres’ representatives agreed to waive their standard 10% commission, allowing Sporting to secure a larger upfront payment and bringing the clubs closer to a compromise.

“Negotiations between Arsenal and Sporting remain ongoing in London with all parties involved,” Romano posted on X. “After commission reduced by agent plus €63.5m fee ready, Sporting ask for €10m add-ons to be easy/guaranteed. Arsenal and agents remain in talks to get the final green light.”

Gyokeres, 27, has emerged as Mikel Arteta’s top attacking target this summer following a record-breaking season in Portugal. The Swedish international scored 54 goals in 52 appearances for Sporting in 2024/25 and has amassed 97 goals in 102 matches since arriving from Coventry City in 2023. Known for his power, work rate, and clinical finishing, Gyokeres has been described as a “battering ram” forward, a perfect fit for Arteta’s high-energy system.

Sporting initially demanded a guaranteed €70 million fee plus €10 million in bonuses and rejected Arsenal’s earlier bid of €65 million plus €15 million in performance-related add-ons.

Despite the impasse, Gyokeres’ desire to join Arsenal, prioritising the Gunners over interest from Saudi Pro League clubs, Bayern Munich, Juventus, and Manchester United has been a key factor in pushing the deal forward. His absence from Sporting’s pre-season training, amid reports that he is unwilling to play for the club again, has only added urgency to the talks.

With personal terms already agreed on a five-year contract and Gyokeres’ agents in London finalising details, Arsenal remain hopeful of sealing the deal before the club’s pre-season tour of Asia.

The striker’s arrival would mark another major signing in Arsenal’s aggressive summer window. The club have already added Martin Zubimendi (£51 million from Real Sociedad), Christian Norgaard (£15 million from Brentford), and Kepa Arrizabalaga (£5 million from Chelsea). A £52 million move for Chelsea winger Noni Madueke is also close to completion, while Valencia defender Cristhian Mosquera has already bid farewell to his teammate and fans as he prepares to complete his move to Arsenal this week.

To help balance the books, Arsenal could sanction the departure of Belgian forward Leandro Trossard. As reported by BBC journalist Sami Mokbel, the Gunners are open to selling the 30-year-old, who is attracting interest from Bayern Munich and Saudi clubs. Trossard’s contract talks have reportedly stalled over salary demands, with Arsenal valuing him at £20 million.
