The Wizards announced Monday they are waiving center Richaun Holmes. The Washington center only had $250,000 guaranteed on his $13.28 million contract for the 2025-26 season prior to his release Monday. He will be an unrestricted free agent once he clears waivers later this week.
Holmes, 31, averaged 7.4 points and 5.7 rebounds over 31 games last season. He only averaged 17.2 minutes per game. A rebuilding Washington squad re-signed him to a two-year deal last offseason likely as a potential trade chip. However, no appealing deal came to fruition and now the Wizards will stick with younger talent in their frontcourt amid a rebuild.
Holmes is expected to draw interest from multiple teams for the veteran’s minimum, which is all the Celtics would be able to offer him now. Boston can offer the ability to compete for more playing time than most other teams around the league given Boston’s current big man situation. Kristaps Porzingis, Luke Kornet and Al Horford have all departed Boston this summer, leaving Neemias Queta, Xavier Tillman and Luka Garza as the team’s only true bigs on the 15-man roster.
Whether the Celtics actually will have any interest in Holmes due to his age is a fascinating question. They’ve certainly eyed younger players in free agency this offseason in Garza and Josh Minott. Holmes can still play but he’s closer to the end of his career than the beginning at this point at age 31. The team also has a potential younger big man option playing with them during Summer League in former Spurs center Charles Bassey.
Boston currently has 15 players signed to their main roster but a couple of those players are on non-guaranteed deals. The team is likely not done tweaking the roster with trades or signings this offseason since the team’s payroll currently sits slightly above the second apron.
Here’s a look at Boston’s current depth chart as of July 14
