The Cleveland Browns have high hopes for second-round pick Quinshon Judkins.
The former Ole Miss and Ohio State running back selected Judkins to conceivably replace long-time fan favorite Nick Chubb, who has since signed with the Texans.
But a funny thing happened on the way to training camp.
Judkins was arrested over the weekend on misdemeanor domestic battery charges in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
That puts his availability for training camp in question. Rookies are scheduled to report on Friday, with veterans following on July 22.
Judkins was released after posting a $2500 bond.
The Athletic's Zac Jackson noted why the timing of Judkins' legal troubles couldn't be worse.
"This contract situation... means he could be in limbo, and he could end up missing valuable training camp time for multiple reasons," Jackson noted. "In these situations, the NFL begins investigating immediately. Certainly, his not being under contract adds a layer of mystery and potential complication in terms of him being on the field if the Browns have qualms or if there is a drawn-out legal process."
For Cleveland, it's the second offseason in a row where a rookie has found legal issues. Last season, Ohio State defensive tackle Mike Hall Jr. was arrested on the same charges as Judkins, and eventually served a five-game suspension.
The Browns were hoping for an exciting offseason this year, but they hoped that was due to the four-way battle at quarterback.
