Newcastle United are once again linked with a big-money move for Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike.
Eagle-eyed Newcastle United supporters have noticed Hugo Ekitike strip Eintracht Frankfurt from his social media bio.
Reports have ramped up linking the Frenchman with a big-money move to St James’ Park. Toon chiefs famously failed to sign Ekitike on two occasions in 2022 before joining Paris Saint-Germain.
Newcastle twice agreed a £25million deal with Reims following a fine breakout campaign when the Saudi-backed era was in its infancy. However, Ekitike headed to PSG, with Toon fans frustrated having felt used as bait in the negotiating process.
Hugo Ekitike’s revival
A dismal two years in Paris saw the forward frozen out by Luis Enrique. In truth, that was always going to be the case as he fought for a starting role against Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe.
Ekitike moved to Frankfurt - initially on loan - before making the switch permanent last summer. He netted 22 goals across all competitions to establish himself as one of Europe’s best attacking prospects.
Liverpool are the club that have been linked with Ekitike the most since the campaign ended. However, fresh Newcastle interest has emerged following their failed pursuit of Joao Pedro.
Fabrizio Romano on Hugo Ekitike
Italian sports journalist Fabrizio Romano claims Newcastle’s interest is genuine. He told his YouTube channel: “Newcastle are working on the deal to sign Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt. I told you last week and I maintain my position. Newcastle want Ekitike. They wanted Joao Pedro before he went to Chelsea so they are still looking to add one more offensive player.
“They believe Ekitike is perfect for Eddie Howe in terms of skills, potential and goals to bring to the squad and play Champions League football. Newcastle are working hard on the deal to sign Hugo Ekitike.
“He is a top target for them, really pushing now and working on the agreement on the player’s side at Eintracht. Of course, he is an expensive player so it is not an easy deal but Newcastle are in it in these hours, not three or four weeks. Let them work and see what is going to happen.
“Newcastle are really interested in Hugo Ekitike and are in contact with people in the deal. Let’s follow the situation but for sure, Hugo Ekitike and the Premier League is going to be one of the stories in the second-half of this summer transfer window.”

Newcastle fans are an investigative bunch during transfer windows and have noticed a subtle - but potentially major - change on Ekitike’s social media. The 23-year-old removed any reference to Frankfurt from his Instagram bio amid the transfer speculation.
An innocuous update, or something for Newcastle supporters to hang their hopes on? Time will tell as the Magpies seek another transfer breakthrough following Anthony Elanga’s arrival last week.
