On Monday, A Bola reported Aston Villa were in exclusive negotiations with Benfica for Enzo Barrenechea. They also stated the Premier League club won’t listen to any other offers until they finish talks with the Eagles.
Barrenechea is on the front page to today’s edition of Record, and it’s claimed he should arrive at Benfica in the ‘next few days’.
Within the report, it’s stated the Aston Villa player is ‘on his way’ to the Estádio da Luz.
The Primeira Liga side made an official bid of €12m and made further progress in recent hours, after their president, Rui Costa, improved the offer by €3m.
Record states the operation is well on track and only the sell-on percentage needs to be agreed with Aston Villa.
The Argentine received interest from other clubs but reportedly wants to join Bruno Lage’s side. He believes Benfica are the right club for him and is excited to work with his compatriot and role model, Nicolás Otamendi.
Argentine journalist César Luis Merlo took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to report that the 24-year-old is ‘very close’ to joining Benfica as their negotiations with Aston Villa are in the ‘final stages’.
He adds Barrenechea is set to sign a five-year contract with the Eagles.
