Man City are running out of time to sign £25m star Pep Guardiola really wants - opinion

Manchester City still have some big business to complete before the summer transfer window shuts.

The Premier League giants have been one of the busiest clubs in the transfer market over the last two windows, with Tijjani Reijnders’ arrival at Man City being the eighth signing to complete a move to the Etihad Stadium since January.

Despite this, City are not done, as Fabrizio Romano expects Pep Guardiola to try and sign a right-back before the new Premier League season gets underway in August.

This remains a big issue in the legendary coach’s squad, and with Man City struggling to find the perfect fit for the role so far, this week may be the last chance the Premier League club gets to make a move for a player Guardiola really wants.

Man City need to move for Wesley soon

Man City have been interested in Flamengo’s Wesley since May, when it was reported that the English club were pushing to get a deal done for the Brazilian star.

Reports out of Brazil in recent days have stated that Guardiola has told Man City to move for Wesley this summer; however, the Manchester club are running out of time to get a deal done.

Fabrizio Romano is reporting that Wesley insists on joining Roma ahead of the new season, but the Serie A club are yet to agree a fee with Flamengo for the player, with Roma’s latest €22m (£19m) package turned down by the Brazilian club.

€25m (£22m) is what Flamengo are expecting to part ways with the 21-year-old, and with a difference of just €3m (£2.5m) between the clubs, this week could be the last chance Man City get to intervene, as Roma are very likely to match this fee soon.

Despite Guardiola’s admiration of the player, it seems that Man City are not totally convinced about a move, as the Premier League giants would have approached by now if they had no doubts about the Flamengo star.

How Wesley compares to Matheus Nunes

Wesley is similar to Matheus Nunes in ways as the 21-year-old is a very attacking right-back, who uses his speed to get up and down the line, while he likes to create chances in the final third.

The biggest difference is that right-back is the Brazilian’s natural position, and therefore, the defender has honed his skills for the role over the years more than Nunes, who is a natural midfielder.

Both players would be good options for Guardiola throughout the upcoming season as they could rotate in the position until Wesley gets fully acclimatised to the Premier League.

It remains to be seen if Man City move for the 21-year-old this week, given it is the last chance they will get to do so.
