Borbe: “I’m realising now how big this club is!"

After arriving at the Sobha Realty Training Centre from VfL Wolfsburg, the size and history of Arsenal Women Football Club has made an instant impression on German goalkeeper Anneke Borbe.

Speaking about what it’s like to be joining the UEFA Women’s Champions League winners, our new recruit said: “My first impression is that it's a big club. I'm realising it now, how big it is. I'm really looking forward to meeting all the girls.

“I’m really excited to be here and to join this amazing club. I watched the Champions League final and I was excited for the team!”

Before joining us, Anneke had spent all of her football career playing in Germany, where she won Player of the Season with Werder Bremen in 2022.

“I played for Werder Bremen for a long time actually, like seven or eight years,” she added. “Then I transferred to Wolfsburg for two years, then I played my first games in the Champions League and now I'm here.

"The goalkeeper union is like a team within the team, so I'm really looking forward to meeting them!"

“I played my first Champions League game in Lyon. It was a great game. We lost it, but it was still a great experience.

“The goalkeeper union is like a team in the team, so I'm really looking forward to meeting the girls.

“My main strength, I think it's obvious that I'm pretty tall, so dealing with crosses. I think that's a strength, and I think playing football, just being a goalkeeper who plays the game. I think it's getting really important to be good with the feet and play football.”

Anneke has never been to Emirates Stadium before, so she can’t wait to find out what it’s like to experience the atmosphere created by tens of thousands of Arsenal supporters.

“I'm really looking forward to it, for the atmosphere and the fans, I'm looking forward to meeting all of them!”
