Midfielder abandons pre-season tour to seek Premier League move – Leeds United are interested

Leeds United have taken a different approach to the transfer market compared to last year’s newly promoted clubs. Ipswich Town, Southampton and Leicester City were all relegated last season.

Ipswich and Southampton mostly focused their recruitment within England – they signed players from the Championship and Premier League. Ipswich almost exclusively spent most of their budget signing players from the Championship. Eventually, all three clubs went back down, with most of the signings being tagged as flops.

It looks like Leeds have taken a lesson from this. The Whites have signed four players from Europe’s top five leagues – Lukas Nmecha, Jaka Bijol, Sebastiaan Bornauw and Gabriel Gudmundsson. A total of just over £30million was spent on these players.

The recruitment team have done a great job, two of the signings will most likely be automatic starters, while the other two provide depth off the bench.

QUIZ: Can you name the team Leeds United sold these players to?

Leeds United continue search for midfielder

Leeds are yet to add to the midfield this summer. The Whites targeted a move for Habib Diarra and Noah Sadiki before they joined Sunderland.

Sean Longstaff is the priority for the club right now, but Newcastle are not willing to budge on their asking price. Reports suggest that Leeds will wait out the Magpies and make a move later in the window, when Newcastle could be forced to sell. Hoffenheim star Anton Stach is another option, but the Bundesliga side have warned that the midfielder will not come cheap.

Getafe midfielder Christantus Uche was linked with a move to Leeds over a month ago. The 22-year old had a breakout season in La Liga this year.

According to AS in Spain, Uche has decided not to join Getafe in pre-season as he looks for a move. The report indicates that he has his sights set on the Premier League; with Leeds, Wolves and Brighton in the race. The Spanish side would be looking for around £17million this summer.

What does Christantus Uche offer in midfield?

Straight off the bat, the Getafe midfielder is not really a ”midfielder” in the sense. He came into the Spanish club as a midfielder, but external factors saw him moved into attacking midfield and most times, as a striker.

Uche has even been used out wide in a 4-4-2. He is very versatile, but also a good player all-round. The 22-year old has adapted to multiple positions and roles and contributed 10 goals (four goals, six assists) in La Liga last season. He could be a gem Leeds could unearth this summer.
