Olympique Marseille have opened negotiations with former Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang over a potential return to the Vélodrome, according to French outlet Foot Mercato.

The 35-year-old Gabon international is currently a free agent after parting ways with Saudi Pro League side Al Qadsiah, where he struggled to replicate the form that once made him one of Europe’s most feared forwards. Marseille are now exploring the possibility of bringing him back to Ligue 1, where he previously starred during the 2023/24 season.

Talks between the player’s representatives and Marseille reportedly took place on July 10, with the club keen to assess the feasibility of a reunion. New head coach Roberto De Zerbi is said to be supportive of the move, viewing Aubameyang as an experienced and impactful addition to the squad. However, salary negotiations remain a sticking point, as the club is determined to stay within its revised wage structure.

Aubameyang’s previous stint at Marseille was hugely successful. The former Arsenal captain netted 10 goals in Ligue 1 and added another 17 across all competitions, playing a crucial role in the club’s Europa League campaign. His explosive pace, lethal finishing, and dressing room leadership made him a fan favourite at the Vélodrome, and his potential return has already generated excitement among supporters.

However, financial caution remains a priority for Marseille’s hierarchy. While De Zerbi has given the green light, the deal will only proceed if the striker agrees to terms that align with the club’s budgetary framework.

The timing of the discussions is significant, as Marseille look to rebuild following a disappointing eighth-place finish in Ligue 1 last season. The club is aiming for European qualification in 2025/26, and Aubameyang’s experience and pedigree could provide the attacking edge needed to complement De Zerbi’s progressive style of play.

Marseille may face competition for Aubameyang’s signature, with several European clubs reportedly interested in signing the veteran forward on a free transfer. Still, the lure of a return to a club where he previously thrived could tip the balance in OM’s favour.

For Arsenal fans, the news revives memories of Aubameyang’s prolific spell at the Emirates, where he lifted the FA Cup in 2020 and served as club captain. His career took a downturn following his move to Barcelona in 2022 and a brief stint at Chelsea, but a return to Marseille might offer him the ideal stage to end his career on a high.
