It's been a huge summer transfer window for Liverpool so far. The club have brought in Giorgi Mamardashvili, Freddie Woodman, Armin Pecsi, Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez, as well as sealing the exciting arrival of Florian Wirtz for a British record transfer fee that could end up reaching £116m.
And they may not be done just yet. Reports emerged on Tuesday, July 15, that the club hold an interest in bringing in Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak before the summer transfer window closes.
The ECHO understands last season's second-highest goalscorer in the Premier League, Isak, is top of the Reds' list as they advance to bolster their attack before looking to retain their English title. Whilst the striker could end up being tempted should a bid materialise, no club-to-club contact has taken place at this early stage.
The Athletic reports Liverpool could be willing to do business around the £120m mark. Such a figure holds significance as it would smash the current British transfer record that was set just 25 days ago when German international Wirtz completed his transfer to Anfield from Bayer Leverkusen.
Provided all add-on clauses are met that deal will tot up to £116m eventually, but up front a £100m club-record cost was involved.
In response to the transfer, former manager Klopp said: "There's no question about it, that's an insane sum. We all agree that we're talking about a great player here.
"I know I once said that I'm out if we pay €100m for a player. But the world keeps changing. That is how the market is.
"My part of football will always remain the game itself, but if you want to play at the top level, you can't train all your players yourself. Sometimes you need to get hold [of players from] somewhere else."
Klopp also added that Wirtz, even with his high transfer fee, would fit right in at Liverpool. "Yes, although of course I don't know exactly which position Arne has in mind for Florian.
"He's an outstanding player who can give any club something great. Whether he'll make the reigning English champions even better remains to be seen."
The hope for Liverpool will be that Isak, with his 62 goals in English football over three seasons, will do the same. Liverpool may well do something Klopp thinks is 'insane' if they end up spending big on Isak, but the club will be hoping the striker is worth it.
