Manchester City endured a disappointing season – by their usually high standards – last term, having to settle for a Premier League top-four finish.

Considering the Citizens had lifted an unprecedented four titles in a row prior to last season, and won the treble two years ago, last term was a disappointment.

However, Manchester City have been busy strengthening their squad this year as they look to return to the Premier League and Champions League title fold.

That said, Liverpool could now be about to do something that would end up seriously hurting Man City’s title chances next season.

Manchester City could be up against especially strong Liverpool outfit as Alexander Isak sought

Liverpool have been busy in the transfer market themselves this summer, signing the likes of Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong.

However, the Reds aren’t done yet – they have now tried their luck for Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak.

Transfer insider Graeme Bailey has confirmed that Liverpool have been in touch with Newcastle as they explore a potential move for Isak.

Although the Magpies have “not welcomed” Liverpool’s approach, they have signalled their intent, and there’s a long way to go until the transfer window shuts.

Liverpool’s squad was strong before the transfer window, making relatively light work of winning the title, and they’ve since made a host of top new additions.

Signing Isak would make them a real force to be reckoned with, and City’s job of winning the title stands to become a lot harder if they manage to land the Swede.

If Liverpool don’t manage to sign Isak, then they will look at a move for Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitike.

“Liverpool appreciate Ekitike, as they do (Benjamin) Sesko and a few others,” Bailey confirmed.

However, the Reds’ dream target is Isak and they seem intent on signing him, suggesting Ekitike is a somewhat distant second on their wish list.

“They know the market and what is available, but they won’t make their move until they know Isak is off the table and they have never believed he was to this point,” added Bailey.

“If Isak rejects a new deal at Newcastle, there is something there and Liverpool think that.”
