Victor Wembanyama sends clear message to Spurs fans

When the San Antonio Spurs selected Victor Wembanyama with the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, the fanbase as a whole was quite eager that they would be getting a superstar level talent for the entirety of his career. And according to Wenbanyama, he would very much like for that the be the case.

Wembanyama has been as good as advertised in his two years in the NBA, averaging 22.5 points per game, 10.8 rebounds, and 3.7 blocks over the course of his incredibly promising career.

The team success hasn’t quite been there yet for the Spurs. But despite this, Wembanyama made it incredibly clear that he would like to remain in San Antonio for the remainder of his career if all goes to plan.

“I know that not every player in the NBA has the same ambitions, but it’s obviously my dream to spend my entire career with a single franchise. Here. In San Antonio,” Wembanyama said to French sports reporter Maxime Aubin on Monday.

Victor Wembanyama isn’t going anywhere, Spurs fans:

We have of course seen plenty of great players make these kinds of statements only to ultimately end up playing elsewhere. But either way, this kind of comment has to be exactly what Spurs fans had been hoping to hear from him as he enters his third year in the NBA.

Now, it is on the Spurs organization to build a winner around Wembanyama to keep him happy in San Antonio. And while the results haven’t been great to this point for the Spurs, they seem to be building an incredibly promising young core.

Not only did the Spurs add Rutgers point guard Dylan Harper with the No. 2 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. But they also made a move for established former All-Star De’Aaron Fox last season to bring another star-caliber player alongside Wembanyama.

Additionally, the Spurs sure seemed to get it right in the 2024 NBA Draft by drafting Stephon Castle, who was named the Rookie of the Year last season after averaging 14.7 points per game last year.

With all of these talented players alongside Wembanyama, the Spurs could very well be a dark horse contender to watch in the Western Conference next season. Especially considering Wembanyama was recently cleared for the upcoming 2025-26 NBA season after being sidelined with deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in his right shoulder.
