Franz Beckenbauer felt Man United icon was "one of the most talented players of all time"

As one of the best centre-backs in football history, when Franz Beckenbauer chose to praise someone, you listened. The legendary German was an assured presence in the heart of his nation's defence, guiding West Germany to a European Championship in 1972, as well as the World Cup final two years later.

Not only an exceptionally talented player, Beckenbauer possessed the tactical intelligence and understanding to seamlessly transition into football management, leading his nation to World Cup glory in 1990. In both careers, spotting talent was a key part of his job, so you knew someone was special if he singled them out.

The former defender called Pele the "greatest player of all time" and said that Johan Cruyff was "the best footballer Europe has produced," neither of which are claims that anyone would disagree with. But Beckenbauer said that one player he watched was one of the most talented players in football history.

'One of the Most Talented Players of All Time'

Beckenbauer believed George Best deserved to play in major final

George Best at Manchester United

Beckenbauer had no shortage of praise for George Best, who took the world by storm during his years at Manchester United. The winger possessed a great turn of speed, but combined that with technical ability which allowed him to turn defenders inside out while dribbling and an eye for goal.

Although he is recognised as one of the greatest players of all time, Best didn't play in the final of a major international competition. And when speaking about the Northern Irishman, Beckenbauer stated that he was the finest player to never have the honour.

"George Best was one of the most talented players of all time and probably the best footballer who never made it to a major world final."

Beckenbauer is far from the only legend to give Best his flowers, though. Pele said that at one point, the winger was one of the best players in the world. Diego Maradona, meanwhile, stated that the United icon inspired him when he was younger. He added:

"I actually think we were very similar players - dribblers who were able to create moments of magic.”

Having enjoyed a short youth career playing for Cregagh Boys Club, United scout Bob Bishop keenly recommended that the Red Devils sign the youngster. In a now-infamous message to legendary United manager Sir Matt Busby, he said, "Boss, I think I’ve found you a genius."

Best made an impression soon after arriving in Manchester, making his professional debut shortly after turning 17 and winning a cap for Northern Ireland at the same age. The attacker quickly became a cornerstone for the Red Devils, and would go on to form a part of the "Holy Trinity" alongside Denis Law and Sir Bobby Charlton.

He was a part of several memorable moments in the club's history, playing a key role in the 1968 European Cup Final when he gave United the lead in extra-time against Benfica. That same year, he claimed the Ballon d'Or after scoring 28 goals that season.

Although he had personal battles away from football, his 11-year career at Old Trafford lives long in the memory of United fans. Speaking about the forward's legacy, Sir Alex Ferguson, like Beckenbauer, believes the only thing missing was an appearance in a world final.

"Players in that situation are denied the chance of being assessed among the greatest players in the world. Nonetheless, George is up there in the pantheon of great players."
