There cannot have been many West Ham fans holding their breath in expectation of the Hammers to succeed with their genuine – yes, genuine, attempts to sign Liverpool’s Harvey Elliot. Insiders told us the intent and desire was real – but all along the little voice in my head was saying Harvey Elliot to West Ham? “No way Pedro”!
In the same way there seemed genuine expectation within the management that the Hammers stood a chance with the signing of the most sought-after free striker in Europe this summer, Jonathan David.
There does seem to be an element of naivety as to the ‘appeal’ of West Ham United just now at London Stadium.
Fifteenth in the league, no European football and hardly the most settled club with three managers inside twelve months. Nine behind the ball at most times ‘coma-inducing’ football on the pitch.
On top of that the West Ham United board making it known that “West Ham needed to sell to raise money before buying” hardly endears them to new prospects.
So when talkSPORT sound the death knell of West Ham’s interest in Elliott, is anyone really surprised?
“West Ham priced out of deal for Harvey Elliott” is the report title: Over £40 million was the Reds’ asking price – the Irons have already reconsidered and, according to Talksport :
“recently-appointed head of recruitment Kyle McCauley has already started working on a list of alternative options. These are thought to include Elliott’s Anfield teammate Tyler Morton and Manchester City’s James McAtee, although the latter is believed to favour a move abroad.”
Well “no **** Sherlock” as my friend Alan used to say. Next.
