Arteta Open to Sacrificing Key Star if It Unlocks Arsenal’s Summer Plans

Arsenal’s summer transfer window continues to evolve, and while much of the focus has been on potential arrivals, there may yet be a surprise departure from Mikel Arteta’s attacking ranks. According to reports, while Arteta values both Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard highly, the club could be open to parting with one of them — but only if it helps unlock a deal for one of their remaining top targets.

The Gunners are in the midst of a busy window, working on multiple fronts to strengthen their squad ahead of the 2025/26 season. Arsenal have already made significant strides in signing a new striker and adding depth in midfield and defence. However, with financial fair play regulations and squad balance in mind, the North London club may need to generate funds through sales to push through additional signings.

Both Martinelli and Trossard have been key figures under Arteta. Martinelli, still just 23, is seen as a long-term asset, having exploded onto the scene with his electric pace, direct dribbling, and relentless work rate. Despite a slightly quieter 2024/25 campaign compared to his previous season, the Brazilian remains a fan favourite and a crucial part of Arsenal’s identity under Arteta.

Trossard, on the other hand, has offered immense value since joining from Brighton in January 2023. The Belgian’s versatility, intelligence in the final third, and ability to score important goals — especially off the bench — have made him an extremely useful option for Arteta. Last season, he was frequently used in rotation and often delivered in high-pressure moments.

However, as Arsenal aim to elevate the squad even further, sources suggest that a high-profile sale could help facilitate a marquee signing, such as another wide forward or creative player. This is where the futures of Martinelli and Trossard could become relevant. Clubs across Europe — including sides in the Bundesliga, Serie A, and Saudi Arabia — are known to be monitoring both players, though no official bids or serious negotiations have taken place yet.

Arteta is said to be open-minded. He values squad harmony and tactical flexibility, but also recognises the need to make tough decisions to progress. If moving one of his wingers could generate significant funds and clear space for a new arrival — particularly a player who fits his long-term vision more precisely — he may be willing to sanction a deal.

At this stage, there are no major developments or concrete offers on the table. But as the transfer window continues, Arsenal fans may want to keep an eye on potential movement involving one of their two left-wingers. Should a big opportunity arise for a new signing, Arteta and sporting director Andrea Berta could be forced to make a calculated sacrifice.

For now, both Martinelli and Trossard remain part of Arsenal’s plans — but in a summer full of ambition and shifting priorities, nothing is off the table.
