There are five players in the history of the Washington organization who have had the honor of having their numbers retired.
After Nov. 2, that number will increase to six.
On Tuesday, the Washington Commanders announced they are retiring the No. 81, worn by 1980 first-round pick and wideout Art Monk. Monk played in Washington throughout the 1993 season before joining the Jets and Eagles for one season each.
The other five players to receive that honor are Sammy Baugh, Bobby Mitchell, Darrell Green, Sonny Jurgensen and Sean Taylor.
Washington will honor Monk on Nov. 2 in a game against the Seattle Seahawks. That game is also the first time we will see the Commanders' new "throwback" uniforms that are similar to what Monk wore during his time in Washington.
When Monk retired after the 1995 season, he was the all-time leading receiver. He now sits at No. 23 with 12,721. He also set an NFL single-season record with 106 catches in 1984.
Former fellow receiver and teammate, Gary Clark, told Monk what was happening on Nov. 2
"This is a moment that's been a long time coming," Clark told Monk. "You showed us what greatness looked like every single day with your work ethic and your humility and how you carried this franchise with dignity."
Monk was part of three Super Bowl championships and was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2008.
"I'm just so honored, I'm so thankful," Monk replied to Clark. "I played the game because I loved the game and I loved to play."
