Jackson County Executive Frank White adds new Chiefs-only stadium proposal

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Both Kansas and Missouri have made pitches to keep or get the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals on their side of the state line.

Jackson County has now thrown its hat into the ring to keep the Chiefs at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.

Frank White, the Jackson County executive, proposed a three-way sales tax split.

Under this proposal, voters would need to renew Jackson County’s 3/8-cents sales tax. In turn, Arrowhead would get renovations, public safety infrastructure would be restored and there would be an investment in public health.

This proposal only addresses the Chiefs; the Royals were not mentioned at all.

In April 2024, Jackson County voted against renewing a 3/8-cent sales tax extension to fund stadium projects for the Chiefs and Royals.

According to White, here is how the plan would work: instead of splitting the money equally between the two teams, the money from the 3/8-cent sales tax would be split three ways:

Allow the Chiefs to make the renovations already proposed to Arrowhead

Provide funds for county upgrades, including the courthouse and juvenile detention center

Give University Health the necessary capital for expanding healthcare services, which could go a long way for health services across the county.

“There’s always been a tie where Jackson County, this hospital and the patients we serve that relationship has transcended multiple leaders at the county level for multiple decades,” said Charlie Schiels, president and CEO of University Health.

While the Royals weren’t mentioned in the plan, the county executive did say he supports the city’s efforts to retain the team.

It’s unclear how the 3/8-cent sales tax would cover all of this, and in response to the proposal, Governor Mike Kehoe says there still needs to be a solution with fair property tax assessments.
