Darwin Nunez’s future remains in the balance despite scoring for Liverpool against Preston North End at the weekend.

Nunez struggled for game time under Arne Slot last term, and the Uruguay international has been drawing interest from elsewhere, including Napoli.

He scored only seven goals for Liverpool last season as the Reds won the Premier League title.

The 26-year-old has failed to live up to expectations at Anfield since his transfer from Benfica in the summer of 2022, hence, a move away feels like the best option for all parties.

AC Milan and Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal have also shown interest in Nunez.

It was reported last week that Napoli would move away from a potential deal because it was getting too expensive, and are now closing in on Udinese striker Lorenzo Lucca.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano earlier said on his YouTube channel: “Nunez continues to wait for Napoli, but he can’t wait forever, despite other significant offers.”

“Everyone is waiting for Napoli to make a decision regarding the striker and figure out which path they will take. Darwin Nunez has important opportunities in Saudi Arabia, so it’s clear he can’t wait forever for Napoli.”

Romano has now confirmed that Nunez’s move to Napoli from Liverpool is off, however, Nunez is expected to leave the club this summer.

He posted on X: “Napoli have informed Liverpool tonight that Darwin Nunez deal can be considered off.

“Napoli will sign Lucca as new striker despite Nunez opening doors to the move, fee considered too high.

“👀 Nunez, still expected to leave #LFC this summer with Saudi clubs and more keen.”
