Manchester United are still waiting for their next headline transfer deal

Since securing a move for Matheus Cunha early into the summer, it has been a somewhat frustrating period for Manchester United in the transfer market.

The Red Devils have seen targets like Liam Delap and Viktor Gyokeres opt for clubs higher up the Premier League.

United have signed some younger players with Diego Leon costing just £7m while Enzo Kana-Biyik has joined on a free transfer. Both players could see first-team action next season but have not been signed with a view to immediately break into the senior side. Kana-Biyik is poised to head out on loan, so would need to be recalled in January to play for United this campaign.

David Ornstein gives update on Bryan Mbeumo to Manchester United

Writing in The Athletic, highly-respected and reliable reporter David Ornstein said of United’s bid to sign Mbeumo: “The gap between Manchester United and Brentford on their valuation of Bryan Mbeumo remains considerable. The two sides are several million pounds apart.

“There have been no significant developments over the past couple of weeks, and a deal is still not imminent, but talks continue as United work to complete a move for the Cameroon forward.”

The news of no significant progress despite weeks of talks will not fill supporters with encouragement but as the Red Devils ‘ work to complete a move’, the fact negotiations remain active is a positive sign that an agreement can be reached.

Mbeumo scored 20 goals and provided seven assists in the Premier League last season and could add some real firepower to the United forward line next season. Following his impressive 2024-25 campaign, United legend Gary Neville put him in his Team of the Season, and said: “What Mbeumo has done this season is special, I think he’s fantastic and someone I would love to have on my team .”

‘Not impossible’ Bryan Mbeumo remains at Brentford

United’s have had two bids rejected for Mbeumo, with the second offering £55m up front with £7.5m in add-ons. Speaking last month, the Bees director of football Phil Giles said it was possible the forward could remain in West London.

He said to BBC Sport: "He had a fantastic season. We expected big interest in him, we have had big interest in him.

"He has his ideas about where he wants to take his career. He is well within his rights to do that.

"It is not impossible he is still a Brentford player next season if we agree he is going to stay."

He added: "If it's not right deal, why would we do it?

"He is certainly one of our best players, if not our best player, and we need our best players. There's no harm in keeping your best players."
