Manchester United have endured a frustrating summer transfer window so far. They have signed just two players, with Matheus Cunha arriving as the first in a £62.5 million deal from Wolves last month. Diego Leon then signed as the second in a £3.3m move from Cerro Porteno in Paraguay.
The Reds have been working on a transfer to bring Bryan Mbeumo to Old Trafford, but that has proven to be difficult. Brentford don't want to lose the 25-year-old and are playing hardball. In fact, Keith Andrews' side believe Mbeumo, who scored 20 goals last season, is worth around £63m.
Elsewhere, United want to get players out of the door. Alejandro Garnacho, Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia have informed the club of their desire to explore different opportunities this summer.
With this in mind, the Manchester Evening News has taken a look at the latest transfer news from United...
Ekitike attempt
Manchester United have made a last-minute attempt to secure Hugo Ekitike from under Newcastle United's nose, according to TEAMTalk. It's claimed that Ruben Amorim's side have made a 'serious 11th-hour bid' to hijack Newcastle's move for Ekitike. The Reds have made contact with Ekitike and his representatives.
INEOS is involved in speeding up the transfer and United are considering a player-plus-cash offer. Ekitike enjoyed a fine season at Eintracht Frankfurt, scoring 22 goals and provided 12 assists in 48 appearances.
MEN says: Ekitike should be United's first-choice striker target this summer. While I think he will move to a Champions League club, the Reds should push hard to try and convince him to move to Old Trafford.
The 22-year-old has got everything a modern centre forward needs. He is quick, strong, can run in behind but also has a unique dribbling ability for a 6"3 man, similar to that of Alexander Isak.
Hojlund deal
AC Milan are working behind-the-scenes to get a deal done for Manchester United forward Rasmus Hojlund, according to Italian media outlet SportMediaset. Ruben Amorim's side are closing in on a deal for Mbeumo and that could open up the departure for one of their strikers, including the Denmark international.
With Santiago Gimenez starting pre-season as Milan's only senior recognised front-man, they need at least another centre forward and Hojlund is right at the top of their shopping list.
MEN says: To enable a move for Ekitike, one of Hojlund or Joshua Zirkzee has got to go. Because Zirkzee has the ability to play in the two No.10 roles and improved as last season wore on, I think Hojlund has to be the man that is sold. Having had previous experience in Serie A at Atalanta, Milan wouldn't be a bad club for him. He has the potential and ability to be their main man next season ahead of Gimenez, that's for sure.
