Whether Wilson Isidor is good enough for the Premier League only time will tell. But the Sunderland striker says that from the moment he first kicked a football, he had one goal in mind - and one person he wanted to make proud.
“My mum, I always told her that I would be a football player since I was four or five,” he told safc.com.
“Now she can say that her son is a Premier League player. I am really proud of that.”
It’s not just a personal triumph. For Isidor, stepping into the Premier League wearing red and white means everything - not only to his family, but to a club, a city, and a group of team-mates who’ve fought tooth and nail to be here.
“I’m also thinking about the lads who were in League One with Sunderland,” Isidor added. “Now they can say they were Premier League players, so that’s amazing.”
For a player like Isidor, who grew up with the dream driving him on from his childhood into adulthood, promotion isn’t just about football. It’s about legacy. It’s about promises kept.
“This moment isn’t just mine,” he said. “I’m really happy for the club, the group and the fans. I’m not Premier League - we are all Premier League.”
But reaching the top is only the beginning. The hard work is far from over - and Isidor knows it. There are giants to face and huge hurdles to overcome.
“We know that we have to prepare well because the league is going to be tough and we are playing some big opponents,” he says.
“If we want to compete with them physically, technically and tactically, we will have to work seriously and hard.”
Still, belief runs deep - just like it always has.
“With the group that we already have, we are ready to tackle that. I’ve no doubt that after pre-season, we can be confident about the season.”
Since arriving on Wearside a year ago, Isidor has gone on to form an unwavering bond with the fanbase. Exciting them with his blistering pace and his goal scoring prowess.
With a pre-season trip to Portugal at the forefront of his mind, Isidor is looking forward to reconnecting with them on foreign soil.
“I was not there last season so I didn’t know how they travelled to other countries,” he added.
“I can’t wait to see that. We have some big games. We’re playing in a different stadium so I am really happy to see that.”
