The latest transfer news as Wolves, Leeds United and Brighton battle to sign a talented midfielder.
Wolverhampton Wanderers are reportedly in the race to sign versatile Getafe gem Christantus Uche but face competition from several other Premier League clubs.
The Old Gold are in the market for a new midfielder this summer following the loan departure of Tommy Doyle and Vitor Pereira would ideally like to sign someone who can play in an array of roles. Uche, who recently enjoyed a terrific breakthrough season in La Liga with Getafe, certainly fits that bill.
Just 22 years of age, Uche played 33 times in La Liga last term, scoring four goals and providing six assists. The Nigeria international played in a host of roles including centre-forward, attacking midfield, central midfield and defensive midfield, showing off his immense versatility.
Wolves eager to sign £17m Leeds & Brighton target
Uche, who could give Marshall Munetsi a run for his money in the versatility debate, was recently linked with a potential move to Wolves. The speculation is now building further as AS reports - via Sport Witness - that Wolves, Leeds United and Brighton & Hove Albion have all expressed ‘genuine interest’ in signing Uche in the coming weeks.
Said to be valued at around €20 million (£17.4m) by Getafe, Uche impressed scouts with his exploits in the Spanish top flight throughout 2024/25. The Nigerian may only have one proper full campaign under his belt but his potential was clear to see as he stood out in a Getafe side which finished 13th in La Liga.
Writing now on wall for Wolves target
Getafe recently travelled to Valencia for pre-season training and excluded Uche from their squad completely in what could be a rather big transfer hint. The writing appears to be on the wall for the 22-year-old, who AS reports isn’t pushing for a move away from Getafe but is very much open to the idea of moving to the Premier League.
It’s not just English clubs keen, however, as the report suggests a team in Italy is also interested in acquiring Uche’s services. If the midfielder does move on this summer, his former club AD Cueta will receive 12.5 per cent of the transfer profit.
If Uche does complete a Wolves switch this summer, it’s tricky to imagine how he could fit into the starting lineup immediately. Brazilian duo Andre and Joao Gomes have created a formidable partnership at the base of midfield, Marshall Munetsi is likely to be ahead in the pecking order for a box-to-box role and Wolves are expected to sign a different striker to be the deputy to Jorgen Strand Larsen.
Even if that does end up being the case and Uche is utilised as more of an impact substitute to start with, that could work well. Not only would the Getafe man need time to settle into the intense rhythm of the Premier League, but his energy and power could be very handy when opponents dwindle towards the end of matches.
