All the attention has been on Man Utd’s forward line, however, there is an update on a midfielder who has been targeted.
Manchester United will have had a long list of targets heading into this summer with Ruben Amorim in charge of a huge rebuild.
One area that Amorim inherited an imbalanced mixed of players is in midfield and it looks like the United boss is trying to find an enforcer, a playmaker, someone with the experience and quality to knit everything together.
Interest in Man Utd target Wilfred Ndidi hots up
Casemiro isn’t getting any younger and, despite a short upturn in performances, he isn’t the future of the club and it is clear that they would love to get him off the wage bill. It is an area of the park that has a real mix of youngsters who need guidance, new signings who need to adapt to the pressures of life at Old Trafford and players who Amorim acquired and isn’t quite sure what to do with.
It is why United have been linked with Wilfred Ndidi, a known quantity, a safe pair of hands with over 60 international caps and hundreds of appearances in English football. The added bonus is that his £9m transfer release clause from Leicester City doesn’t break the bank and allows Amorim to stiffen up his midfield at the same time.
According to Florian Plettenberg of Sky Sports Germany though, the 28-year old also has plenty of interest from the Bundesliga: “Wilfred Ndidi has also received requests from Bundesliga clubs. A summer transfer is possible for the 28y/o defensive midfielder from Leicester. Price valuation: €15 million (£9m). One to watch.”
What did United legend say about Wilfred Ndidi?
Ruben Amorim has first hand experience of how effective Ndidi can be having dominated United’s midfield in an FA Cup tie at Old Trafford. It was the sort of performance that had former Foxes boss Ruud van Nistelrooy waxing lyrical about the enforcer’s display both on and off the ball, via Leicestershire Live: "You’ve seen the game, the way he played, the way he lifted the team, on the ball, off the ball. His performance was excellent, but also his leadership.
"Not only the captain’s armband he wore, the way he led the team, the way he demanded from his surroundings, coaching, talking, preventing situations from occurring.
"I thought Bouba and Wilf had a great partnership today on the ball but also off the ball to control the game."
Ndidi might not be a flashy signing, however, like Corentin Tolisso of Lyon, he is an essential signing. Someone who can controle and cajole those around him and help to take a bit of the pressure off Bruno Fernandes. Maybe one day the skipper won’t have to do it all on his own.
