Turnover-plagued Pelicans continue Summer League misery with loss to Portland Trail Blazers

The New Orleans Pelicans’ Summer League woes continued Tuesday night.

Once again, turnovers did the Pelicans in.

The Pelicans committed 26 turnovers in a 93-87 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers in Las Vegas.

The Pelicans dropped to 0-3 and have lost nine straight games in Summer League play. Their last Summer League win came in 2023.

The Pelicans got productivity from first round draft picks Jeremiah Fears and Derik Queen, but both also had far too many turnovers for the Pels to end their skid.

Queen had his best game yet. He recorded his third straight double double (17 points and 10 rebounds), and had a dominant first half stretch where he showcased the skillset that made the Pelicans trade up to get him with the No. 13 overall pick. Queen also had 3 assists and 2 blocked shots. But on the flip side, he committed 8 turnovers.

Fears finished with 14 points, but had 6 turnovers and just one assist. Fears has just three assists through the first three games. Fears was ejected in the fourth quarter after picking up his second technical foul.

For the second straight game, Antonio Reeves led the Pelicans in scoring. Reeves scored 18 points.

Keion Brooks came off the bench and scored 16 points.

It was the second time in three games the Pelicans had at least 25 turnovers in a game. They had 25 in the opener against the Minnesota Timberwolves. They improved in the second game, committing 15 against the Lakers. But they regressed on Tuesday.

The Pelicans have a quick turnaround, playing the undefeated Oklahoma City Thunder Wednesday night. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. central.
