West Ham’s transfer window appears to be catching fire, with Douglas Luiz next on their radar.

With El Hadji Malick Diouf being confirmed as a West Ham player, Graham Potter can turn his attention elsewhere in the market.

With there being uncertainty surrounding Tomas Soucek’s future in E20, reinforcing his midfield looks to be an obvious priority for Potter ahead of his first full season in charge.

After leaving Aston Villa to join Juventus last summer, Luiz could now be set to return to the Premier League, but this time with West Ham.

The Irons have now made their move.

Harvey Elliott is another midfield transfer target for the East London outfit, with the youngster currently being out of favour at Liverpool.

With Elliott being a more attacking-minded midfielder, Luiz could complement the Englishman perfectly in West Ham’s engine room.

La Gazzetta dello Sport has reported in its print edition (16 July, pg 5) that West Ham are the favourites to secure the signature of the 27-year-old Brazilian.

Following Luiz’s disappointing season in Italy, where he was limited to just three starts in Serie A, clubs are hesitant to match Juventus’ £34.7million price tag up front.

The Hammers would be willing to initially loan the midfielder with a fee of around £8.7million before making the move permanent later.

This fee would be in the region of £21.7-26million, depending on his performances whilst in London.

Everton are also said to be another one of the clubs interested in Luiz, meaning West Ham must operate swiftly if they want to ensure the Brazilian is playing his football at the London Stadium next season.

Luiz signing worth the risk for Potter

Whilst injuries derailed the former Villa man’s season out in Italy, limiting him to just 522 total minutes in Serie A, a deal is worth the risk for Potter.

In Luiz, West Ham would be securing a Premier League-proven midfielder in his prime for relative peanuts when considering some of the other deals that take place in today’s market.

Luiz had a phenomenal final season at Villa before joining Juventus.

If Luiz can recapture this form from his time at Villa, his value would instantly skyrocket again.

Initially, loaning the player would be smart business for West Ham, who could then assess how he settles in East London before opting to make the move permanent.

If Elliott and Luiz can both be brought to E20, then West Ham could have the makings of a midfield that sees them fighting to play in Europe again next season.
