Are the Lakers set to lose Luka Doncic as he delays his contract extension?

NBA insider believes Luka Doncic is likely to sign his contract extension with the Lakers in September, after EuroBasket 2025, where he will be playing with the Slovenian national team.

Los Angeles Lakers fans may be growing uneasy over the lack of updates regarding Luka Doncic’s upcoming contract extension.

Doncic becomes eligible to sign an extension with the Lakers on August 2nd. However, according to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, fans shouldn’t panic if things don’t move quickly.

"I would not expect it to happen that early. He's playing for the Slovenian national team. Do not freak out if you do not hear from Luka contractually until September," Windhorst said on ESPN's NBA Today show.

EuroBasket 2025 kicks off on August 27, and if Slovenia makes a deep run, Doncic could be playing until the tournament concludes on September 14.

With the Lakers, Doncic put up strong numbers, averaging 28.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 7.2 assists per game while shooting 43.8% from the field and 37.9% from three-point range.
