West Ham have been linked with a move for Liverpool youngster Tyler Morton.
Morton is a decent prospect, and Hammers boss Graham Potter certainly has a reputation for picking out exciting young talent.
However, if the West Ham boss were to pursue this transfer, it would send a clear message to other young midfielders in his squad.
Freddie Potts is hoping to break through this year, after an impressive season on loan at Portsmouth.

Morton transfer would send clear message to Potts and Earthy
Morton is 22 years old. He has only made short cameos in Liverpool’s first team, although he has also performed well during loan spells in the Championship and for England under-21s.

However, this is still a player with potential. This isn’t a young star with the credentials of Harvey Elliott, for example. He hasn’t proven he can make the step up to the Premier League.
Potts and George Earthy are in a similar boat to Morton.
They’ve both performed well on loan in the Championship and are waiting for their big break in the Premier League. It has been suggested that Potter might give them their chance this season.
If the West Ham boss were to make a significant bid for Morton, that would send a clear message to Potts and Earthy: “I don’t think you’re good enough”.

Potter should be trusted to make the right decision
Earthy and Potts have been patiently waiting for their opportunity at West Ham, and some fans may be excited for them to get their chance
Of course, if Morton (or any other midfielder) is signed and turns out to be a world-beater, none of that matters. Winning is the most important thing.
Potter is known for signing and developing young talent. If he thinks Morton is worth buying and picking ahead of West Ham’s existing academy players, he should be trusted to make that decision.

Potts and Earthy shouldn’t stick around if he decides to pursue Morton, though.
It’s one thing splashing the cash on a proven Premier League star like Harvey Elliott. It’s quite another to spend big money on an unproven youngster who plays in your position.
The latter move would be a clear sign that Potts and Earthy are unwanted at this moment, with yet another loan exit on the cards, if so.
