Matt Targett of Newcastle United
Matt Targett of Newcastle United
Newcastle United are willing to part with left-back Matt Targett this summer, three years after they paid Aston Villa £15m to sign him on a permanent basis after a successful loan spell.
Targett joined the year they were promoted back to the Premier League after a three-year absence, back in 2019; he was a regular for two and a half years under and the beginning of tenure, , a transfer which displaced Targett as first-choice left-back.
As a result, the Southampton academy product left to join Newcastle on an initial loan spell in January 2022, and he played regularly in the second half of the season to earn himself a permanent switch on a four-year contract.
Unfortunately for Targett, though, his time on Tyneside has been ravaged by injuries; indeed since completing the permanent move in the summer of 2022, he has played just 22 Premier League matches and made only five league appearances since the summer of 2023 - ironically his only two top flight cameos last season came against Villa, home and away.
Targett is now 'available', one of a number of Toon players who could leave St James's Park in the coming weeks of the transfer window as they prepare for their Champions League campaign with the intention of strengthening their squad. Targett is currently behind first choice Lewis Hall at left-back at any rate.
Targett cost Villa around £14m when he joined from boyhood club Southampton in 2019, a place where he'd spent 15 years as an academy and first-team player. He scored three goals for Villa; dramatically against Brighton, in a win at Crystal Palace early into Gerrard's tenure and in the EFL Cup semi-final conquering of Leicester City, across his 89 appearances.
