Grading Boston Celtics’ Summer League players at midway point

LAS VEGAS — The Celtics are more than midway through their Summer League slate. They had a busy start after playing three games in four days, putting up a 2-1 record. The C’s started with wins over the Grizzlies and Knicks before falling to the Heat. If they want to make the Summer League semifinals, they’ll need some help now.

The C’s finish off their schedule with a 9 p.m. Thursday game against the Lakers. They’ll have at least one more game afterwards, though that one will depend on how they fare in the standings.

Here’s a look at some of the notable Celtics players who have played thus far in Summer League:

Jordan Walsh

Stats (three games): 20.7 minutes, 14.3 points, 3.3 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 0.7 steals, 0.0 blocks, 1.7 turnovers. Shooting 43.3% from the field and 35.7% on 4.7 3-pointers per game.

Walsh entered an important Summer League after developing with the C’s over the past two years. He’s put together a solid showing through three games thus far as the offensive game is the question mark for him going forward. Walsh did get ejected from the Heat loss in the second quarter, though C’s coach Joe Mazzulla loved the fire.

Grade: B+

Baylor Scheierman

Stats (three games): 28.9 minutes, 13.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, 7.0 assists, 2.7 steals, 0.0 blocks, 1.7 turnovers. Shooting 31.3% from the field and 21.4% on 9.3 3-pointers per game.

Scheierman showed some impressive work in the Knicks win as he almost put together a triple-double. The playmaking has been there along with the consistent compete level. However, the shooting and efficiency are the things that stick out as he’s missed plenty of shots, though he’s at least willing to put up those tough looks.

Grade: B-

Hugo Gonzalez

Stats (two games): 27.6 minutes, 11.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 0.5 steals, 1.0 blocks, 4.5 turnovers. Shooting 29.2% from the field and 33.3% on 6.0 3-pointers per game.

Gonzalez has showed flashes of why the Celtics picked him at the end of the first round in the 2025 draft. He hit a wall in his second game, the loss to the Heat, where he admitted he played poorly. He’s been willing to put up the 3-pointers, though his efficiency inside the arc hasn’t been great. Still, he’s just 19 years old going up against some grown men in Summer League, so the potential is there.

Grade: B-

Miles Norris

Stats (two games): 24.3 minutes, 9.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 1.0 assists, 1.5 steals, 1.0 blocks, 2.0 turnovers. Shooting 37.5% from the field and 27.3% on 5.5 3-pointers per game.

Norris was on a two-way contract with the Celtics last season. He hasn’t had too much of an opportunity with the C’s thus far this summer, but he’s also showed solid play. Much like his teammates, though, the shooting efficiency is where he needs to be better.

Grade: B

Max Shulga

Stats (three games): 22.6 minutes, 6.0 points, 1.3 rebounds, 4.3 assists, 1.7 steals, 0.3 blocks, 0.3 turnovers. Shooting 27.8% from the field and 11.1% on 3.0 3-pointers per game.

Shulga’s had the ball in his hands a decent bit throughout Summer League. The shooting stats haven’t been good enough when he’s put up shots. Notably, his assist-to-turnover ratio is impressive considering he’s set up his teammates. But he’ll need to make some shots at some point.

Grade: C+

Charles Bassey

Stats (three games): 21.3 minutes, 15.3 points, 11.0 rebounds, 0.3 assists, 0.7 steals, 2.0 blocks, 1.7 turnovers. Shooting 70.4% from the field and hasn’t taken a 3-pointer.

Bassey was a surprise addition to the Summer League squad, and all he’s done since showing up to Vegas is produce. Considering the C’s are thin at big man, it’ll be interesting to see what the organization does with him. Another team could also be interested in grabbing him after he’s excelled in Summer League.

Grade: A

Jalen Bridges

Stats (two games): 17.5 minutes, 8.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, 0.0 assists, 1.5 steals, 1.5 blocks, 0.5 turnovers. Shooting 50% from the field and 28.6% on 3.5 3-pointers per game.

Bridges got his big opportunity against the Knicks when he put up 16 points in his Summer League debut. He was much quieter against the Heat as he didn’t score in his 12 minutes. The former Suns two-way forward has showcased his athleticism in his limited minutes as he signed a training camp deal with the Celtics.

Grade: B

Kenny Lofton Jr.

Stats (three games): 17.9 minutes, 10.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 0.3 steals, 0.3 blocks, 2.3 turnovers. Shooting 42.9% from the field and 50% on 0.7 3-pointers per game.

Lofton signed with the C’s after spending the 2024-25 season with the Shanghai Sharks. He hasn’t been able to play too much, though he’s put up numbers. His playmaking has also been notable during his minutes.

Grade: B-
