Travers makes move to Everton

As expected and previously reported, AFC Bournemouth goalkeeper Mark Travers has completed his move to Everton.

The 26-year-old has moved for a reported fee of £4 million with unspecified add-ons.

Since making the move to the Cherries in August 2018, Travers has made over 80 appearances for the club.

He made his debut in the Premier League in May 2019, during a 1-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur.

Travers would make another top-flight appearance that season, before being limited to just five appearances during the 2019/20 campaign, including just one Premier League appearance.

During the 2020/21 season, AFC Bournemouth had been relegated from the Premier League and spent the COVID season in the second tier of English football, whilst Travers spent the season on loan with League One side Swindon Town.

The following campaign proved to be Travers breakout season.

Travers made 46 appearances during the season, keeping 21 clean sheets in the process, as the Cherries would go on to finish second in the Championship and win promotion to the top flight of English football.

Travers impressed so much throughout the campaign that he won the vote for the AFC Bournemouth Supporters Player of the Season, AFC Bournemouth Vice-Presidents Player of the Season and the Daily Echo’s Micky Cave Player of the Season awards.

Travers also won the English Football League Championship Golden Glove award.

Unfortunately, he hasn’t been able to hold down the number one shirt in the top flight of English football, initially losing his place to Neto and last season to Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Over the past three campaigns, Travers has made 21 Premier League appearances and has gained regular first-team football while on loan, both with Stoke City and Middlesbrough, where he has amassed 30 appearances in the Championship.

We can confirm the departure of goalkeeper Mark Travers, who has joined Everton on a permanent deal after nine years with the Cherries.

Speaking to the official Everton website, Travers said…

“I’m extremely proud and excited to be an Everton player. Coming in, you can feel how big this club is and the history that comes with it. You really feel that with the fanbase, the new stadium now as well and the direction the Club is going in.

“It’s a fresh start for me to come up here and try a new chapter in my career.

“It’s a really exciting time to be part of this massive football club and I just can’t wait to get going.”

We have completed the signing of goalkeeper Mark Travers on a four-year contract from Bournemouth for an undisclosed fee. ✍️

Good luck to him – never let us down or publicly moaned about his situation.

A fresh start, a huge Club, v good Manager and close to his beloved Ireland.

He may not be a first choice keeper, but there’s only so many loans to Championship Clubs you can go through. He has a chance to put down roots and have a bit of stability.

Its a shame to see him go, but if he isn’t going to play, it is time for him to move on.

Just a bit disappointed and surprised he has gone to be a number 2 elsewhere rather than getting a starting role.

Actually feeling quite a bit sadder than I thought I’d be to see this finalised. Never feels like he was really given a proper chance in the Premier League; if we were a bit worse than we are, he’d honestly be perfect for us. I hope he has a good career, but I’m sceptical that he’ll be able to push Pickford out in any meaningful way. – To join the conversation, please click here.
