Chelsea have been holding discussions with Eberechi Eze’s representatives, according to journalist Simon Phillips.
Writing on his Substack, Phillips revealed that “new talks” have taken place as the Blues consider whether to make a move for the Crystal Palace midfielder before the end of the transfer window.
Eze does have a release clause in his contract. It is believed to be worth £60m upfront and another £8m in add-ons.
Phillips believes that Enzo Maresca’s side may not pay the fee but look to include players in any offer. One option suggested is to use Trevoh Chalobah, who spent the first half of last season on loan at Selhurst Park.
Chelsea are not the only team interested
Reliable reports have confirmed that Arsenal have also held conversations with Eze’s agents. They were keen to discover the details of the release clause and what would be required to sign him.

However, it is thought the Gunners will need to raise funds from player sales if they want to go after the England international, especially if they do secure the services of Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyokeres and Valencia’s Cristhian Mosquera, in addition to Noni Madueke.
A replacement for Nkunku is needed
Eze is likely being targeted to fill the gap left by Christopher Nkunku. The Frenchman was part of the squad at the Club World Cup but he is not happy being a squad player and he is expected to leave Stamford Bridge if a buyer can be found.
Phillips claims that Chelsea are hedging their bets when it comes to potential replacements. In addition to Eze, RB Leipzig’s Xavi Simons is also being courted. The Dutchman is said to be available for around £70m, which means both players would cost a similar amount.
