Liverpool close on deal for League Two prospect after Leicester City interest

Salford City prospect Will Wright is closing in on a six-figure move to Liverpool, according to talkSPORT’s Alex Crook.

Salford City are at the start of a new chapter after an ownership and club hierarchy restructure.

Since rising from the lower reaches of non-league to the EFL, the Amiss haven’t quite been able to maintain the trajectory they had hoped. They are now heading into their seventh season in League One after finished 8th under Karl Robinson last time around.

New signings are on the radar, but departures await too. After a summer of speculation, it seems young star Will Wright is destined for pastures new.

As per reporter Alex Crook, Salford City prospect Wright is now close to joining Premier League giants Liverpool on a permanent basis.

The reigning champions will pay a six-figure fee to take Wright out of the Class of 92’s hands, seeing off considerable competition for the signature of the teenager. It had previously been reported that Manchester City and Championship side Leicester City also had eyes on youngster Wright.

However, after his emergence in Salford, he is set to move to Merseyside as he takes the next steps in his exciting career with Liverpool.

An attractive move for Wright

It isn’t a rarity for Premier League clubs such as Liverpool to raid the Football League for upcoming prospects. While they have great access to youngsters who are taking their first steps in the game, bringing them all the way through the ranks, these top academies regularly recruit from other setups too.

Sometimes, talents such as Salford City ace Wright have already tasted senior football before making big jumps top academies. The Preston-born striker played four times for the Ammies last season, even starting once in League Two.

A stay at the Peninsula Stadium may well have offered a quicker transition to senior football, but few prospects would turn down a move to a club as big as Liverpool. The standard of coaching and the facilities make it a hugely attractive move for Wright.

Salford City’s 2025/26 ambitions

Manager Robinson and the Salford City hierarchy may well have hoped Wright would stay put and continue his development under their watch, but they won’t let it disrupt their preparations for the new season by any means.

After coming up short in the play-off push last season, a top seven finish will be firmly the target for the new campaign.

The summer signings of Jorge Grant, Loick Ayina, Adeboola Oluwo, Jay Biird and Kallum Cesay will hopefully help them do so, with a competitive campaign laying ahead in League Two.
