Manchester United are set to receive a small financial boost following Álvaro Carreras’ move from Benfica to Real Madrid, with the Spanish giants paying €50m (around £43m) for the 22-year-old left-back.
Carreras never made a senior appearance for United, but the Premier League side inserted a 20% sell-on clause in the deal that saw him join Benfica permanently in May 2024 for a reported £5m.
According to [CNN Portugal pundit Diogo Luís](https://maisfutebol.iol.pt/videos/687658db0cf28cf8876825dc/carreras-descobrimos-que-o-man-united-tinha-20-por-cento-de-uma-futura-venda?utm_source=Twitter&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=ed-maisfutebol), who called the operation “fantastic” for the Lisbon club, Manchester United will now pocket 20% of the profit above that £5m fee – equivalent to roughly £6.8m, or €8.3m.
The Spanish defender, who was originally part of Real Madrid’s youth system before spells at Manchester United, Preston and Granada, only joined Benfica permanently earlier this year. He impressed quickly enough to earn a lucrative six-year contract with Real Madrid.
While the size of the deal has been well received in Portugal, it also represents a tidy piece of business for Manchester United, who turned a former academy project into a sizeable return.
