Sunderland are plotting an audacious swoop for former Arsenal captain Granit Xhaka, with the newly-promoted Premier League side in talks with Bayer Leverkusen over a potential €10 million deal for the Swiss international.

According to reports from journalist Ben Jacobs and transfer insider Sachin Tavolieri, the Black Cats, led by ambitious owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus, are keen to bring the 32-year-old midfielder back to England. Despite having three years left on his contract with the Bundesliga side, Xhaka is said to be open to a new challenge following two successful seasons in Germany.

However, Sunderland face serious competition from Saudi Pro League outfit NEOM SC, who have also submitted a formal proposal to Leverkusen and Xhaka’s representatives. While NEOM SC are pursuing a disciplined financial approach, their resources could still make them a formidable rival in the race for the experienced midfielder.

Xhaka enjoyed a stellar 2024/25 campaign, playing a key role for Leverkusen in the Bundesliga and Champions League. He featured 50 times across all competitions, scoring four goals and registering seven assists, earning plaudits for his leadership and midfield control. Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes has acknowledged interest in the player, fuelling speculation over a possible summer exit.

Sunderland’s pursuit of Xhaka forms part of a wider aggressive recruitment strategy under new sporting director Florent Ghisolfi. The club has already splashed over £89 million this summer, bringing in the likes of Chemsdine Talbi from Club Brugge, Brighton’s Simon Adingra, and Atlético Madrid’s Reinildo. Xhaka is reportedly being offered a three-year deal and would be expected to bring vital Premier League experience to Régis Le Bris’ squad.

The Swiss international spent seven seasons at Arsenal between 2016 and 2023, making 297 appearances and winning two FA Cups. A return to the English top flight would mark a significant statement from Sunderland as they gear up for life back in the Premier League.

In addition to Xhaka, Sunderland have been linked with several other high-profile targets, including Lens midfielder Neil El Aynaoui, Lyon striker Georges Mikautadze, and Toulouse defender Charlie Cresswell.
