Four things we learn as Everton kick-start their pre-season to Accrington Stanley

Everton's first pre-season outing resulted in a 1-1 draw as the Blues came from behind to John Doolan's Accrington Stanley at the Wham Stadium.

It was a lively start from the home side with Ben Woods came closet to the opener when his looping header was pushed over by Harry Tyrer.

David Moyes's men took a while to get going but forced loanee signing Ollie Wright into numerous of saves to deny Everton, and Youssef Chermiti

Five minutes after the restart and Stanley got their goal from a set piece as Benn Ward was left unmarked at the back-post and his effort sneaking past Tyrer.

Isaac Heath won the Blues a penalty following a clumsy challenge from Liam Coyle and Beto dispatched it into the top-right corner to level it up.

So, what did we learn from Everton's opener and should their be any cause for concern?

This time last year the youngster was an unknow quantity and impressed during Sean Dyche's pre-season which left Armstrong in and around the first team.

Following a hugely successful loan spell at Derby County where the 18-year-old played a key part in the Ram's survival the midfielder started in last night draw and once again stood out.

The West Derby born linked up well with Carlos Alcaraz, was tidy in possession and almost broke the deadlock with a curling effort which was well saved.

Everton's midfielder option is already slim so does the club loan him out again to continue his development or keep him within the first-team squad and risk stagnating his development?

Youngsters impressed

During the second-half David Moyes introduced Isaac Heath and Justin Clarke who both looked lively and both had a bright cameos

Heath, who won young player of the season last year won Everton the penalty following a direct run at Accrington's back-line producing a quick stepover before being taking out by Doyle, leaving the referee pointing the spot.

Clarke, who joined the club last year from AFC Wimbledon was direct and looked promising for Everton. The 16-year-old almost got an assist where he laid it off for Dwight McNeil before his effort was parried away.

At just 16 Clarke seems to have the right build and didn't look out of place and was causing problems for John Doolan's men. William Tamen also had a strong second-half.

The need for a right winger

Up until Clarke's bright display McNeil was deployed on the right struggling to cause a threat, cutting in centrally and no creating any width, so it only highlights the need for a natural right winger even more.

McNeil is a key player for the Blues with a dangerous left foot and key for when it comes to creating big chances but, also the defensive side to his game has been important for Dyche and now Moyes.

Last season both Jesper Lindstrom and Jack Harrison didn't look convincing or comfortable out on the right and Everton can't have this problem occur again as it's been a recurring problem for a numerous of seasons now.

Is it time to panic yet?

It's well apparent that Everton have a slim-bear squad following the likes of Ashley Young, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Dominic Calvert-Lewin have all departed the club and the need for acquisitions is a must.

So far, the club have signed Theirno Barry and Mark Travers, with the permanent signing of Carlos Alcaraz and David Moyes saying the club are continuing to work on bringing new players into the club.

It's too early for panic to set in as notoriously the summer transfer window takes a while to get going before clubs get desperate but with the club having a big reset and rebuilding they will need around 8-10 players to bulk out the squad.

With the Premier League Summer Series around the corner, Everton will hope to have a few more players in on board.
