Alexander Isak reported back to Newcastle United for pre-season training on Monday afternoon as speculation surrounding his future on Tyneside continues.
The 25-year-old was one of several players handed an extended summer break after the Premier League season finished at the end of May.
As a result, the Sweden international played no part in Newcastle's 4-0 friendly win over Carlisle United on Saturday afternoon.
Less than 48 hours after thrashing the National League outfit, the Magpies flew out to Innsbruck for a five-day training camp in Austria.
But shortly after Eddie Howe's side landed in Austria on Monday, there were questions as to whether Isak and his team-mate Sandro Tonali had made the trip.
But any doubts around the duo's attendance were put to bed on Monday as Newcastle took to social media to upload a photo of both Isak and Tonali in Austria. The Magpies shared an update which said: "Look who’s here!" along with two beaming face emojis.
On Tuesday, though, speculation surrounding Isak's future at St James' Park ramped up as reports in the national press [claimed Liverpool had made direct contact with the Magpies over a move for the striker.](http://Jamie Carragher and Michael Owen have already made Alexander Isak feelings clear as Liverpool plot bid)
However, the ECHO understands that no one at Liverpool has made contact with anyone at Newcastle about Isak as things stand.
But the Reds are stepping up their attempts to bolster their forward options, with the Sweden international emerging as a leading target.
The Premier League champions have been long-time admirers of Isak, who has been an outstanding success since arriving at Newcastle for £62million from Real Sociedad in 2022
Newcastle are adamant they do not want to sell Isak this summer, with the striker valued at more than £100m.
