One of the biggest storylines surrounding the Jacksonville Jaguars ahead of the regular season is whether Trevor Lawrence is the long-term answer behind center. Drafted first overall in 2021, the former Clemson Tiger has played at a high level at times but hasn't been consistent enough throughout his career. Thus, 2025 figures to be a pivotal year. Based on his comments, he's well aware of the situation he finds himself in.
Lawrence made an appearance on the Pardon My Take podcast and acknowledged that he needs to "turn it on," noting that Jacksonville has put him in a position to do so.
"I feel like this is like getting into my prime," Lawrence said on PMT, via NFL Media. "I got a lot of good years left ahead of me, and I need to really turn it on. And I think what we've built around me and what they've done this offseason has been a great start."
Lawrence is right when he talks about the moves the front office made in the offseason to help him. Aside from beefing up the offensive line, they rounded out an arsenal of weapons that already included Brian Thomas Jr. with Travis Hunter and Dyami Brown.
On top of that, Lawrence will benefit from the arrival of head coach Liam Coen. During his lone season as the offensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Coen turned the Bucs into an offensive powerhouse and helped Baker Mayfield post career numbers.
Even though this will be the first time Coen will be a head coach at the NFL level, he appears ready for the transition from offensive coordinator. So far, he's gotten rave reviews from the media and players alike. Lawrence, in particular, believes his system will help him get back on track.
"I have a lot of confidence in this system; it is tried and true," Lawrence said during a sitdown with Pro Football Network. "It's a great system for quarterbacks."
Lawrence is entering his fifth season as the quarterback with the Jaguars. He signed a long-term deal in 2024 that ensures that he remains behind center for a couple of seasons, but he'll need to come through in 2025 if he wants to play for the duration of the contract, which runs through 2030.
Trevor Lawrence must show that he's the franchise QB the Jaguars envisioned
Now, Trevor Lawrence isn't the reason the Jacksonville Jaguars have only gone to the playoffs once since 2021. Heck, he's been the reason they've had a chance to begin with, despite the fact that he hasn't always gotten help from the team. That said, quarterbacks are expected to deliver regardless of their circumstances, and he hasn't always done it. The biggest reason is that he has struggled to stay healthy the past two years.
Granted, there's an element of randomness to injuries, but availability is the most important ability, and No. 16 has missed it. Currently, he's recovering from an AC sprain and the subsequent surgery he underwent in 2024. He's trending in the right direction, but will need to be at full strength if he wants to perform to the best of his capabilities in Liam Coen's scheme and take advantage of his upgraded supporting cast.
The bottom line is that Trevor Lawrence has a prime of opportunity to remind everyone he's still the same talented quarterback he was coming out of college. It will be up to him to seize it.
