Now, as per Caught Offside, Manchester United have reportedly made “preliminary contact” with Lyon midfielder Corentin Tolisso over a potential move this summer.
The experienced Frenchman has been around the block quite a bit and could add some experience and fill the void left behind by Eriksen.
The 30-year-old midfielder has had a decorated career so far, winning five Bundesliga titles, a Champions League with Bayern, and a FIFA World Cup win with France in 2018.
That pedigree could add depth and winning mentality to United’s engine room, which has looked awfully clueless in recent times (except Casemiro).
An excellent box-to-box midfielder, Tolisso scored 10 goals and set up 9 assists across 46 matches, demonstrating both attacking intent and end-product from midfield.
He could add a different presence alongside Casemiro, Manuel Ugarte and Kobbie Mainoo.
At £22m-£26m, the Les Bleus star represents notable value for a player with such wealth of experience and quality. Lyon’s financial position makes negotiations viable and United could secure a proven operator without overspending.
He offers stamina, leadership, and tactical versatility, traits that could spread over rotations. His combination of defensive grit and forward intent suits Amorim’s possession-press style and adds competition to midfield.
Despite being around for a while, it is also worth noting that Tolisso is just 30 years old. Approaching his peak age-wise, the Frenchman could have a few more solid years at the top level and Man Utd could be signing him at the perfect time.
It remains to be seen if Man Utd make a concrete attempt to sign Tolisso this summer. One will assume that this signing is unlikely to be a priority but more a market opportunity and let’s wait and see how things play out in the coming weeks.
