A three-way transfer tussle is unfolding as Arsenal have made a late and aggressive push to sign highly-rated 17-year-old striker Will Wright from Salford City — a player Liverpool had been leading the race for.
Wright, a 6ft 3in Preston-born forward, enjoyed a breakout season last year, scoring over 50 goals across Salford’s youth and reserve teams.
He made headlines again this summer, netting four goals in three pre-season games, including a brace against FC United of Manchester.
His blend of physical presence and clinical finishing has earned him comparisons to classic centre-forwards and caught the attention of England’s top clubs.
Liverpool were initially in pole position to secure Wright’s signature. The Reds had been in advanced talks with Salford and hoped to wrap up the deal swiftly after tracking the teenager for several months.
However, Arsenal have now moved decisively. According to the Irish Sun (16 July), the Gunners submitted a significantly improved package worth over £250,000 upfront, with add-ons potentially taking the fee above £500,000.

Will Arsenal beat Liverpool to sign Will Wright?
Salford City, owned by Manchester United’s Class of ’92 figures including David Beckham and Gary Neville, have not yet agreed a deal, but Arsenal are now considered favourites.
Liverpool’s earlier offer, believed to be around £100,000, now looks underwhelming in comparison.
Tottenham Hotspur have also been monitoring Wright’s situation and are reportedly considering a late entry into the race.
Spurs view the striker as a long-term option who could initially bolster their U21 squad, with a view to progressing into the senior team — particularly amid uncertainty around Richarlison’s future.

Wright is currently in the second year of his scholarship at Salford, having been discovered playing for Euxton Villa and AFC Fylde just two years ago.
His rapid rise from grassroots football to FA Cup appearances and elite interest underlines his remarkable potential.
As things stand, Arsenal are pushing hard to finalise an agreement in the coming days, while Liverpool must act swiftly if they hope to keep one of England’s brightest young talents from slipping through their fingers.
