The 32-year-old shooting guard has agreed to a contract buyout with the Suns and plans to join Los Angeles on a two-year, $11 million contract with a player option, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported.
Beal has spent the last two seasons in Phoenix after getting traded from the Wizards in a June 2023 blockbuster.
He is giving back $13.9 million of the remaining $110 million on his deal, with the Suns planning to waive-and-stretch the money over five years, according to Charania.
The player option in Beal’s deal with the Clippers sets the stage for the St. Louis native to be a top free agent next summer.
The Suns hoped the arrival of Beal would create a formidable Big 3 with Kevin Durant and Devin Booker, but the experiment did not work — the team lost in the first round of the playoffs in 2024 and missed the postseason in 2025.
Beal, a three-time All-Star, averaged 17.0 points, 3.3 rebounds and 3.7 assists with the Suns this past season, playing in 53 games and starting in 38 of them.
Beal is a bona fide scorer who can create his own shot, and he averaged more than 30 points per game with the Wizards in both 2019-20 and 2020-21 – although Washington had a losing record in both seasons.
Now, he’ll join forces with Kawhi Leonard and James Harden on a Clippers team looking to break through in the crowded Western Conference picture.
Charania reported that Beal prioritised “finding the best basketball fit, first and foremost” as he tested the waters for a new team.
The Suns reportedly granted Beal the permission to talk to several interested suitors, and the player had the control to decide where he wanted to end up.
The ESPN report also noted that the Heat, Bucks, Timberwolves and Lakers were among the teams to have unsuccessfully pursued Beal.
The Suns will now reset with an overhauled roster in the wake of Beal’s buyout and the June 22 trade that sent Durant to the Rockets in exchange for Dillon Brooks, Jalen Green, draft picks Khaman Muluach, Rasheer Fleming and Koby Brea and one additional second-rounder.
With Beal out the door, attention turned to what moves Phoenix could make including adding a cheaper veteran point guard but it sounds like Ben Simmons is not an option.
NBA insider Marc Stein reported that Beal’s move to L.A. is “expected to spark movement in the rest of the veteran guard market” for players including Simmons.
