NFL insider applauds Steelers for bold gambles few saw coming

When Peter Schrager took to ESPN’s Get Up this week to reveal his top five rankings of the NFL’s offseason acquisitions, it came as no surprise to see the Pittsburgh Steelers dominating the list.

Two of their headline-grabbing moves—trading for star wide receiver DK Metcalf (ranked No. 4) and signing future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers (No. 1)—received high praise.

Honestly, I couldn’t agree more.

The end of the 2024 season left the Steelers at a crossroads. Years of middling offensive play had worn thin on both the fans and the franchise. Omar Khan and his front office had difficult decisions ahead—rebuild or reload.

What followed was a bold, calculated effort to transform the identity of the team’s offense, and so far, it looks like they nailed it.

First came the blockbuster trade for DK Metcalf. Known for his elite size, speed, and playmaking ability, Metcalf instantly brought excitement back to the Steel City. But it wasn’t just a rental—the team committed to Metcalf long-term with a four-year, $132 million extension.

That move alone sent a clear message: the Steelers are serious about surrounding their next quarterback with talent.

The Pittsburgh Steelers decision to invest in DK Metcalf and Aaron Rodgers was perfect

Then came Rodgers. After months of speculation, the Steelers and the four-time MVP agreed to a one-year deal worth up to $13.65 million.

At 41, Rodgers may not be the long-term answer, but he doesn’t have to be. He brings leadership, experience, and an elite football IQ that could elevate the entire offense under new coordinator Arthur Smith.

It’s a short-term swing for greatness—and one the Steelers had to take.

I admire the clarity with which the Steelers approached this offseason. They knew they needed a spark on offense, and they went out and got proven difference-makers. They didn’t wait for the draft or bet on development—they acted with urgency.

And while the regular season hasn’t kicked off yet, the vision is clear.

Schrager’s list simply reflects what many of us already feel—Pittsburgh’s offseason was one of the strongest in the NFL.

Time will tell how it all plays out, but I believe the Steelers are primed for a serious bounce-back in 2025. If this new core gels, don’t be surprised to see black and gold making noise deep into January.
