Chiefs rookie set to benefit most from looming Rashee Rice punishment

The Kansas City Chiefs finally received some clarity as to what will happen with standout wide receiver Rashee Rice after his involvement in a serious multi-car crash, and the punishment is going to have some severe ripple effects on both Rice personally and the team as a whole.

Rice has been sentenced to five years' probation and 30 days in jail to be served at some point during the probation. The NFL will likely move quickly to hand down an official suspension for Rice's actions, all signs of which point to it being a multi-game ban during the 2025 season.

Kansas City's wide receiver room was fairly thin to begin with, and this is likely going to take an even bigger chunk out of it. Luckily for the Chiefs, they have an emerging young player who could easily slide into the starting lineup and provide a convincing Rice facsimile.

The Chiefs picked Utah State wideout Jalen Royals in the fourth round of the 2025 NFL Draft with the thought he can make an immediate impact in this offense, and he might get a golden opportunity to prove himself this year with Rice assuredly in line to miss time.

Kansas City Chiefs rookie WR Jalen Royals could benefit from Rashee Rice suspension

Kansas City was widely thought to have pulled off one of the steals of the draft when Royals was picked late in the fourth. Many pre-draft analysts were surprised that he lasted until the third round, let alone the end of the fourth.

Not only has Royals made a name for himself as a downfield threat at the collegiate level, but his explosiveness on underneath passes suggests that he could be a big part of the solution when it comes to replacing Rice's skills with the ball in his hands. Any Matt Nagy offense will lean heavily on yards after the catch.

The expected starting trio for Kansas City, excluding Rice, will likely feature speed demon Xavier Worthy, veteran underneath playmaker JuJu Smith-Schuster, and deep ball aficionado Hollywood Brown. Royals will be competing primarily with Skyy Moore for snaps, though Royals clearly has the higher ceiling.

Rice's transgressions will cast a dark cloud over the Chiefs irrespective of what happens on the field, but Kansas City does need to find some sort of practical solution to this problem. Taking the training wheels off Royals early in his career might be the best way to ensure this passing game doesn't miss a beat.
