Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice pleaded guilty to felony charges stemming from his role in a 2024 car crash in Dallas.
According to multiple reports, a judge has sentenced the Super Bowl champ to five years probation. As a condition of the probation, Rice will be required to spend 30 days in the Dallas County jail, according to FOX 4 in Dallas.
Just months after winning a Super Bowl with the Chiefs, Rice surrendered to police in Dallas as part of the fallout of the crash on March 30, 2024. Rice was accused of engaging in a street race with another man while driving a a Lamborghini sport utility vehicle.
Rice pleaded guilty to charges of racing on the highway and felony accident causing serious bodily injury. A total of six cars were involved in the crash.
“Last March, I was involved in a high-speed accident in Dallas. There have been a lot of sleepless nights thinking about the damages that my actions caused, and I will continue working within my means to make sure that everyone impacted will be made whole. I urge everyone to mind the speed limit, drive safe and drive smart,” Rice said in a statement from his attorney.
“Last and certainly not least, I am profoundly sorry for the physical damages to person and property. I fully apologize for the harm I caused to innocent drivers and their families,” Rice added via statement.
Now that the case is settled in court, Rice could receive further punishment from the NFL. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the “expectation” is that Rice will serve a suspension during the 2025 season.
“We have been closely monitoring all developments in the matter which remains under review,” an NFL spokesperson told ESPN.
The crash was not Rice’s only off-field incident last year. In April 2024, he was accused of punching a photographer at a nightclub. The photographer reportedly declined to press charges.
