The world's most expensive women's player isn't an established superstar. Instead, she's a 20-year-old Canadian with bags of potential.
When Olivia Smith officially joined Arsenal from Liverpool on Thursday, she moved for a world-record fee of £1 million ($1.3m).
Smith broke the record set by U.S. women's national team defender Naomi Girma, who joined Chelsea from the San Diego Wave in January for a $1.1 million fee.
Girma was already considered one of, if not the world's best defender when she made the transfer. By contrast, Smith only just completed her first season in the Women's Super League, scoring nine goals for a mid-table Liverpool side.
But Smith has been around the senior game for a long time already, becoming the youngest Canada international ever when making her debut in 2019 at age 15 years, 94 days.

She has earned 18 caps for Canada and appeared at the 2023 World Cup and 2024 W Gold Cup, where she was named the tournament's best young player.
Smith truly broke out in 2023-24 with Portuguese side Sporting CP, where she scored 16 goals in her first professional season and was named the Liga BPI Player of the Season.
The forward then moved to the WSL, where she was named Liverpool’s Player of the Season and garnered interest from some of the world's top clubs.
"Olivia is an exciting young player and we believe she can make a big contribution here at Arsenal. We've been impressed by her mentality and character, excelling in two European leagues at such a young age," said Arsenal coach Renée Slegers.
"I know she has a level of ambition that matches our own and we're looking forward to working with her as she continues to grow at the club."
Smith is known for her exceptional dribbling and close control, as well as her ability to create plenty of shooting chances for herself. The 20-year-old plays on the right wing primarily, but can also play centrally.
"It's a privilege and an honor to sign for Arsenal," Smith said. "It's my dream to compete for the biggest titles here in England and in Europe and I'm excited to get started and contribute to doing that here with Arsenal.
"The atmosphere the supporters create at Emirates Stadium is incredible and I can't wait to have that behind me now."
