An army of former players around the league has called into question ESPN’s rankings of the top 10 quarterbacks in the NFL going into the 2025 season.
And unlike the ESPN panelists, they aren’t anonymous.
Yes, the list from Bristol was assembled by a survey of anonymous coaches, executives and scouts from around the league, and yes, we understand the necessary evil of the concept of sources.
But as the panel ranked Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts as the ninth-best player at his position?
We also question the judgment of the sources.
That Hurts ranking is the one that has plenty of people around the league in an uproar.
One of those former players who is furious is former Eagles quarterback Ron Jaworski. Randall Cunningham and Donovan McNabb are known in these parts for doing their thing, but Jaworski’s impact on the Eagles was as notable as any QB in Philly lore. He was the first starting quarterback in team history to lead the organization to the Super Bowl in 1980 and held many passing records at the time of his retirement.
Hurts has since blown many of Jaworski’s records out of the water in his short time as Philly’s starting quarterback.
That is likely among the reasons Jaworski is making it clear to the Philadelphia Inquirer that he is angry with Hurts’ ranking on ESPN.
“Ridiculous. One word I can say is ridiculous,” Jaworski said. “I played the position for 17 years, and my job was to win. To win. Jalen Hurts wins. He’s won Super Bowls and playoff games. When I think of quarterbacks, I think of winning. Jalen Hurts wins.”
Hurts’ statistical numbers aren’t as eye-popping as those of other quarterbacks around the league, but his win-loss record is better than almost any other signal-caller in the game.
And Jaworski has joined the army of smart football people who are trying to steer the focus back to Hurts’ Super Bowl MVP … and how he achieved that.
Jaws knows QBs. And he knows winning. And he is judging Hurts appropriately.
