Next week, Daniel Jones will report to his first training camp as a member of the Indianapolis Colts, where he'll battle it out for the starting quarterback job. Just ahead of his arrival, reports surfaced about Anthony Richardson that could spell bad news for the former Giants QB.
Midway through last season, the Giants decided to end their experiment with Jones under center. This left the former No. 6 pick without a home in the NFL briefly, before the Minnesota Vikings signed him through the remainder of the year. Then, in free agency, Jones decided to ink a one-year deal with the Colts, given their uncertainty at QB.
When the Colts drafted Anthony Richardson, the expectation was that he'd be the franchise's long-term answer at QB. This hasn't panned out, as injuries have impacted his ability to be on the field consistently. However, that could all be changing.
Less than a week before training camp begins, a health update emerged regarding Richardson. It is believed that he has recovered from his shoulder ailment, but he won't be fully evaluated until he arrives for camp.
"Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson Sr. is believed to have recovered from his recent right shoulder setback as the team prepares to report for training camp next week, a source told ESPN," wrote insider Stephen Holder. "Importantly, the Colts have not had a chance to personally evaluate Richardson because players have been on their summer breaks. That will happen when Richardson returns to Indianapolis for training camp next week. Players are required to report by Tuesday."
Since being drafted fourth overall, Richardson has started 15 games for the Colts. In that time, he's posted an 8-7 record while throwing for 2,391 yards and 11 touchdowns.
Though Jones has far more experience as a starting QB, Richardson certainly has the edge heading into this training camp battle. Seeing that the franchise invested a high draft pick in him, he's likely who they want to give the QB1 spot to. It will take a lot for them to go with the veteran on a one-year deal over someone they just selected in the top five of their respective draft.
Seeing that the Colts haven't had a chance to look at Richardson themselves yet, there is still a chance for Daniels. However, if he is healthy and holds his own in camp, the veteran could find himself in a backup role to start this season.
